Abstract:
2003's National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace has provided a foundation to make cyberspace more security. Specifically, the establishment of the US-CERT has increased national awareness through the CERT's alert program. This alert program gives alerts, tips, and best practices for all sectors. Furthermore, the Department of Homeland Security provides cyber-security tips and alerts to civilians and businesses through the StaySafeOnline campaign. This campaign educates people about best practices, increases awareness of threats, and gives users security tool kits. The government's National Infrastructure Advisory Council has created the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Council, the National Cyber Security Partnership, and US-CERT. This council has also provided several approaches to combating cybercrime. In the near-term, the government should encourage the adoption and awareness of best current practices. In the long-term, more research and development is needed to work on core Internet protocols. Finally, law enforcement agencies and ISPs need capabilities to investigate and prosecute cyber criminals.
