Global Environmental Governance: A Reform Agenda

Abstract:
A book that discusses international and institutional policy reform in an effort to improve global environmental governance. The book mentions signs of ecosystem decline and worsening global warming despite the implementation of new and innovative technologies towards these goals over the last few decades. Its preface atriculates that "the current [governance] system has outgrown itself in the wake of its own success... and, rather than proposing grand organizational reforms, the study proposes to work with the existing pieces." Overall, the book aims to instill a long-term "institutional framework for environmental governance at the global level," starting with addressing six current challenges to effective global environmental governance: Proliferation of MEAs (Multilateral Environmental Agreements) and Fragmentation of GEG (Global Economic Governance), Lack of Cooperation and Coordination Among International Organizations, Lack of Implementation, Compliance, Enforcement and Effectiveness, Inefficient Use of Resources, GEG Outside the Environmental Arena, and Non-state Actors in a State-centric System.
