The Economic Impact of Broadband in the Philippines

Abstract:
Revenues from the telecommunication industry accounts for 2.5% of the Philippines' GDP and contributes $267 million per year to the economic growth while employing 525,000 skilled workers. The indirect spillover effects of broadband contributions accounts for a 0.32% of annual GDP, representing 6.9% of GDP growth in the past decade. However, the broadband industry in the Philippines is not mature enough for the econometric model to completely show spillover contributions. The Philippines faces challenges in bolstering its telecommunication industry through mobile broadband integration, fixed broadband acceleration, and network access and coverage expansion. Assesses the economic impact of broadband in the Philippines, evaluates e-application development in the following sectors: education, public health, media, and government services. Uses econometric techniques to calculate the impact of broadband on the economy, jobs, and welfare in the Philippines, as well as estimating the indirect contribution of broadband through spill-over effects on the economy.
