Abstract:
Due to the lack of a clear and explicit sustainability strategy, this report sets guidelines on how to address sustainability issues effectively throughout the activity management cycle. In the context of donor-funded development programs and projects, sustainability is defined as the continuation of benefits after major assistance from a donor has been completed. Key factors affecting sustainability such as partner government policies, local participation and ownership, management and organization, financial, awareness and training, technology, social, gender and culture, environment and external political and economic factors are discussed. The report also provides practical guidance on how to analyze sustainability issues and develop and implement sustainability strategies. By defining sustainability from a development agency perspective, this report gives an insight on a sustainability strategy for international development.
