WHAT ISRAEL'S STRIKE ON HAMAS HACKERS MEANS FOR CYBERWAR

Abstract:
This recent article recounts and analyzes the Israeli Defense Force's retaliation to a cyber attack on Israeli targets. In response to an alleged Hamas cyberattack, the IDF launched missiles and destroyed part of a building in Gaza that the IDF claims the hackers were inside. The details of the attack and retaliation are unclear (as are most details surrounding cyberattacks). This is the first time that a country has retaliated almost instantly to an ongoing cyber attack/threat by kinetic action toward the hackers. This sets an interesting global precedent regarding cyber warfare and kinetic warfare. The article also describes some other related cyber attacks and their responses. Keywords: Israel, Palestine, Conflict, cyber warfare, cyber attack, retaliation, missile, IDF, Russia, Ukraine, precedent
