United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW)

Abstract: 
DAW acts as a focal point for coordination and mainstreaming of gender issues in the United Nations system. Responsible for servicing the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), the main UN policy-making body for women, and the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), which monitors the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, a human rights treaty for women. On 2 July 2010 the General Assembly adopted resolution 64/289, creating UN Women by merging the Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW); the International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW, established in 1976).
