Thailand's Cyber Law Raises Fear Military Could ‘Cage’ the Internet

Abstract:
At the end of February, Thailand passed an extremely vague cybersecurity law that is feared to not rule out the possibility of the government to seize data and technology without explicit legal right. The purpose of the law is thought to be to reduce freedoms in the time leading up to elections. This isn't purely a problem in Thailand though, as Malaysia has similar laws in place. Social media clearly plays an important role in political elections and Chuwiruch asserts that this cyber law would not only allow for potential military intervention, but would also restrict social media use to sway the results of the election. The law is seen to be adequate and protecting for national security purposes, but because of the vague language, it allows for attack on those with differing opinions which creates a situation where cybersecurity is being used as a ploy for power.
