Sustainable Energy Resources for Consumers (SERC) Success Story: Maryland

Abstract:
The article heralds the success of the funding provided by the Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) to test renewable and domestic energy technologies in low-income residences of Maryland. Under the Sustainable Energy Resources for Consumers (SERC) program, Maryland installed some of the most challenging Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) upgrades, including wind turbines, solar photovoltaics (PV), geothermal heat pumps, mini-split ductless heat pumps, hybrid heat pump water heaters, and high-efficiency heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The case study provides a noteworthy example of channeling funding towards development of clean and efficient energy systems in low-income residences by helping local agencies expand their skillsets to install these technologies.
