Abstract:
In 2015, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted. Included in this was the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. They call for action “by all countries to improve the lives of people everywhere.” Specifically, to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. Each goal is further broken down into targets that are to be achieved over the next 15 years. The 17 Goals are: no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry innovation and infrastructure, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water, life on land, peace justice and strong institutions, and partnerships for the goals. While ambitious and far reaching, these are attainable if initiated at the city level, by individuals each doing their part in governments, the private sector, and civil society.
