Securing the Information Highway: How to Enhance the United States' Electronic Defenses

Abstract:
The governance institutions of the United States must make cybersecurity a priority now, because there is so much at stake. Cyberwarfare is a real threat now, and with current internet security measures, the United States is vulnerable. Terrorist groups and other nations both pose threats to the cybersecurity of the United States. A major cybersecurity breach would be nothing short of catastrophic in its impacts to the public and private infrastructure of our nation. Protection must cover not only computer networks and software, but also computer hardware. While solid first steps like the classified Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative (CNCI) have begun to manage the risk, much work remains to be done. This is impeded by the classified status of the information and the resulting difficulty in attracting some of the nation’s best-trained cybersecurity experts from the private sector.
