Nuclear Power and Sustainable Development

Abstract:
"A major goal of sustainable development is bringing energy, especially electricity, to the quarter of the world’s population now without it. Much of the emphasis on energy in the context of CSD-9 and the JPOI has been on expanding energy access and energy supplies in developing countries, i.e. ‘connecting the unconnected,’ particularly through rural electrification. For some rural poor, the best promise may be that offered by off-grid renewables, and additional efforts are essential to realize that promise as quickly and broadly as possible. For others, and for the urban poor and the needs of growing megacities, the mix must include large centralized power generation to match large centralized power demand. Nuclear power can make a substantial contribution, without adding pollution."
