Cybersecurity for the Nation: Workforce Development

Abstract:
This article is written by a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. military, focusing on plans for educating America regarding issues of cybersecurity and the cyberspace. She emphasizes educating the youth population, as they are the “future of America.” She begins by discussing the context of cybersecurity and cyberspace, similar to our discussions in class regarding the issues of defining the terms and what they encompass, then goes on to discuss current government programs deal with national security issues, such as Civil Air Control (CAP) and the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Response Enterprise (CRE). These programs use a combination of private, state, and federal respondents in order to accomplish their goals of protecting the security of the people and respond to threats to national security. The Lieutenant Colonel then goes on to describe how these multi-component approaches can be similarly used for issues of cybersecurity and to educate the youth—to “encourage them to learn about cybersecurity careers, the importance of cybersecurity, introduce cybersecurity principles, and help students better protect themselves.”
