Abstract:
In Bogota, Colombia, a bus rapid transit (BRT) system, Transmilenio, successfully provides a transportation alternative to Bogotá's crowded streets. The busses have designated lanes to continue flowing smoothly through the city as rush hour traffic locks up automobile routes. Transmilenio has conventional problems with capacity at peak hours, but overall provides efficient transport to Bogotá. The BRT system infrastructure is much cheaper than light rail or subway systems to implement, and may provide other cities with a model for economical mass transit.
