Abstract:
The population of Africa is projected to double by 2050, and its energy needs are expected to increase even more rapidly to meet the needs of the growing population and economy. This growth and development would require significant amount of energy input. This report focuses on meeting this growing energy demand using renewable sources of energy. Africa has great potential for renewable energy production from hydropower resources, bioenergy, wind, geothermal and marine resources across the continent, enabling these countries to leapfrog to modern renewable energy. Investment in renewable energy, coupled with strong political backing and improving technological knowledge provides a novel opportunity to provide energy to rural and urban African communities. This transformation would unlock economies of scale, and allow for equitable development in the region, increasing energy security and promoting environmental sustainability. The report also consist of several interesting case studies and success stories from the region.
