Abstract:
Stock enhancement
Fisheries sustainability
Harvest
This study compares the use of commonly used tools for maintaining sustainability in fisheries: harvest restriction and stock enhancement. It seeks to steer policy decisions regarding sustainable fisheries with the comparison. A population model was built to explore the tradeoffs between the two tools. The model was applied in a case study of a Murray cod Maccullochella peelii peelii population in Australia. The study indicates that stock enhancement is less effective than measures that reduce fishing mortality.
