Abstract:
Norsk Hydro, a large aluminum manufacturer, encountered problems with the computer systems that control their IT systems and their manufacturing. Their systems were hit with the LockerGoGa ransomware, which has caused at least one other large attack in the last year. In order to get their systems fully functioning, they had to transition all facilities to using manual controls until they fix the damage caused by the ransomware. According to an analysis of the attack, the reason that the ransomware was able to infect Norsk Hydro’s systems and cause so much damage is that the company has connected many of their facilities’ systems to the Internet without improving security. Many of the systems that they use were created in a time when software like ransomware didn’t exist and cybersecurity was less of a concern.
