Abstract:
The goal of reducing reliance on fossil fuels has been a major goal of the US in the past couple of decades. One of the most promising solutions led by the Department of Agriculture is th search for a renewable biofuel source. Perennial herbaceous plants such as switchgrass are being evaluated as potential bioenergy crops. The study examines the biomass yield of switchgrass and shown that there is 540% more renewable energy produced than nonrenewable energy used. Additionally, it has been shown in this article that the amount of greenhouse gas emissions is 94% less from switchgrass derived fuel than from gasoline.
