Indentifying potential synergies and trade-offs for meeting food security and climate change objectives in sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract:
n sub-Saharan Africa, deforestation and land degradation accompanies hunger and poverty, presenting the dual problem of sustainability and food security. This study introduces agricultural intensifiers to increase crop production such as mineral fertilizer, green manures, and legume-improved tree fallows. In low population density/ high land ability areas, all of the intensification methods resulted in surplus crop area for reforestation. In contrast, in high population/low land availability areas, only the mineral fertilizer was effective in freeing up land for reforestation.
