Water Sources in Syria: Management, Development and Women Role

Abstract:
Water Resources (WR) in Syria are the key factor for the growth and development of economic activities (agriculture, industry and tourism) besides their domestic use. They consist of surface and groundwater with a total availability of 14218 m m3. Since the agricultural sector is the largest consumer of water resources (nearly 90%) at efficiency not more than 50% and the dominance of traditional surface irrigation on more than 80% of the irrigated area, the government has purposely taken a range of legal and institutional measures, conducive to sustainable development and management improvement of water resources at farm level.
