Urban metabolism in China: achieving dematerialization and decarbonization in Suzhou

Abstract:
The key to achieve urban sustainability is dematerialization and decarbonization. Urban metabolism was studied based on 'driving force-pressure-state-response' (DPSR) model and material flow analysis (MFA). Suzhou, a good representative of export-oriented cities in China, was studied. Policy recommendations include 1) industrial structure adjustment from current manufacturing industries to deep processing and more focus services, e.g. tourism and software, 2) technology improvements, 3) reuse and recycling of materials, etc.
