The Untold Story of NotPetya, the Most Devastating Cyberattack in History

Abstract:
NotPetya is one of the worst cyberattacks that the world has seen to date. With a total damage of more than $10 billion dollars, it has taken down power plants, banks, metro systems, and the world’s largest container shipping company. This Wired article provides an in-depth analysis (with more than 3,000 words) about the full ramifications of NotPetya on the Ukrainian economy. It begins with an understanding of how NotPeyta began by infiltrating one storefront (a common theme), and spread faster than it can be controlled, until it had crippled an entire country. This story is a great lesson about the real-world impact of poor cybersecurity policies, as it described that Ukraine was particularly vulnerable due to out-of-date software. While lecture is a great way to understand this, NotPetya is a case study that is very similar to that of TJX, and this analysis makes the entire situation come to life.
