Abstract:
A pre-requisite for sustainable development is a sustainable climate. 80% of the effects of climate change will be borne by developing nations, undermining development efforts. This climate change is driven by the 50,000 mega-tonnes of CO2 equivalents humans release into the atmosphere annually - 2,800 mega-tonnes (5.5%) of which are emitted by the logistics and transport sector. Climate stability therefore requires the decarbonization of transport systems. This paper explores the feasability of various supply chain decarbonization options, and suggests policy instruments to facilitate the shift towards decarbonization.
