Social engineering in cybersecurity: The evolution of a concept

Abstract:
Social engineering is a problem within cyberspace that must be addressed. Social engineering is the manipulation of an individual's behavior, especially through the cyber domain. This new domain in which social engineering can be deployed raises cybersecurity concerns not previously seen in modern society. Social engineering initially entered technology in the form of phone phreaking, but has since progressed to hacking in today's cyberspace as personal computers and smart phones have become more popular. This rise in personal devices give social engineers direct access to individuals through cyberspace. Today, social engineering in cyberspace takes the form of impersonation, third-party authorization, phishing, and many other tactics. We see a convergence of political communities and online networks as a result of social engineering in the cyber domain.
