Masdar Institute Supporting Food, Water and Energy Security, Sustainability

Abstract:
This provides an overview of the Seawater Energy and Agriculture System (SEAS), which aims to tackle the UAE’s water-food-energy nexus in a sustainable manner by creating an aquaculture-agriculture network that: (1) produces shrimp and fish for food; (2) uses waste from the shrimp and fish as fertilizer to grow salicornia for biofuels and biochemicals production; and (3) utilizes the waste streams from the previous steps in providing nutrients for mangrove forests - which provide nurseries for fish and also trap atmospheric carbon.
