Famine in the Twentieth Century

Abstract:
This web site contains an IDS working document "Famine in the Twentieth Century". This document looks at the major famines of the twentieth century and assesses why some nations have succeeded in lowering high mortality rates due to food crises, while others have not. It also examines current theories regarding the causes of famines, and argues that famine prevention requires political strength as well as technical ability.
