Ensuring Safety, Security, and SustainabilityofMission-Critical Cyber–Physical Systems

Abstract:
Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) harness the power of the cyber domain to be applied to the physical world in the areas of health care, the electricity grid, cloud computing, and surveillance with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). CPSs provide the opportunity to have energy-efficient, low-cost, and sustainable functionalities. Their operation relies on three fundamental qualities (S3): safety (from attack), security (assurance of authenticity and confidentiality of information), and sustainability (maintenance of CPSs using green energy sources). Recent CPS S3 solutions come together in this paper to empower CPS researchers to systematically design solutions for ensuring safety, security, and sustainability. Several examples from diverse CPS domains such as body area networks (BANs), data centers (DCs), smart infrastructures (Sis), and UAVs are given to show the effectiveness of the framework in characterizing intended and unintended interactions and aggregate effects.
