Effects of damming on population sustainability of Chinese sturgeon, Acipenser sinensis: evaluation of optimal conservation measures

Abstract:
Dams tend to have a negative impact on river ecosystems. The construction of the Gezhouba Dam on the Yangtze River has been accompanied by a reduction of spawning sites of Chinese sturgeon. This case study has modeled the decline of sturgeon. It simulates the efficacy of conservation measures on the population. The conservation goals include increased spawning area and reduced predation of eggs. Additionally, the study shows that restocking is an inadequate sustainability solution.
