Based in India, the focus of Development Alternatives lies in, creating sustainable livelihoods and development, sustainable technologies and a sustainable social environment. The organization is a researcher and consultant in three branches: Technology Systems, Environment Systems and the Institutional Systems. It aims at trying to bring about environmental and socio-economic equilibrium and efficiency by, innovation and appropriate design of: Technologies, Institutions, Decision making systems, Knowledge structures, Societal paradigms. The commercial wing of Development Alternatives is known as Technology and Action for Rural Advancement (TARA).
