Data Access in a Cyber World: Making Use of Cyberinfrastructure

Abstract:
Vast amount of cyber data has created opportunities for social scientists to study human behavior through a new medium and has made traditional protective mechanisms for social science data obsolete. Social scientists must exploit advances in cyberinfrastructure to develop new access modalities to preserve data and create scientific communities. Uses advances in social science and computer science to outline new approaches to providing data access: technical approach, operational approach, and statistical approach. Portfolio approach to confidentiality protection draws on both utility and confidentiality. Analyzes legal framework, data preservation, and data community issues.
