Problem regions and regional problems of socioeconomic development in China: A perspective from the coordinated development of industrialization, informatization, urbanization and agricultural modernization

Abstract:
The coordinated development of industrialization, informatization, urbanization and agricultural modernization is crucial for to the sustainable socio-economic development of China. This paper evaluates the industrialization development index, urbanization development index, informatization development index and agricultural modernization development index of China’s 332 prefecture-level administrative units. It also calculates their comprehensive development index, coupling development index and coordinated development index. The study found that these indices have obvious spatial differences and show diverse regional patterns. 145 prefecture-level cities, mainly located in central traditional agricultural areas, southwest hilly areas and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, have been identified as problem regions, and therefore it is suggested that more attention should be paid to the development of those areas.
