Forest transitions, trade, and displacement of land use

Abstract:
Examines recent forest transitions from net deforestation to reforestation in concurrence with changes in international trade. Finds that positive effects of reforestation in most of the seven developing countries studied are negated by the import of timber and agricultural products from abroad. Emphasizes the need for sustainability policies to factor in international trade.
